Ha, yes. You and Garrison Keillor, both.
All those coat stands and magazine racks with coloured balls like atoms on them. Reminded me of Expo 58 if that's the right title.

I'm glad we agree :-)

I've liked every Hilary McKay book I've read. My favourite may be Saffy's Angel, the first book in the Casson series (first until HM wrote a prequel, anyway).
