Garden News

Not news from my garden, where the only flowers are on this tough winter jasmine. There's no excuse for it; there are plenty of winter flowering shrubs. Unfortunately whoever planted this garden hadn't heard of them. No, the news is that Monty Don is returning to Gardeners’ World. I'm not such a fan of Monty as some people I could mention :-), mainly because I dislike being lectured all the time about ecological gardening. But, it's bound to improve the show.

Ratings have tumbled and I'm just one of the people who ceased bothering to watch. Sorry, Toby Buckland is just boring. Then there's Alys Fowler. At first she appeared as a gardening geek. Then they gave her a makeover and her own show, The Edible Garden in an effort to make her appear interesting. Epic fail. To me, she always had what Sue Limb once called a 'stern wholemeal gaze'. It got so that the only interesting part of the programme was poking around in Carol Klein's garden.

Apparently, Monty is to present this new series from his own garden, which many people will already have read about. It has to be an improvement.

I more or less gave up on it too, so I'm pleased that he's back. Actually, I quite liked Alys Fowler in her own series (think it was the chickens who really won me over) but she certainly wasn't allowed to be interesting on Gardener's World. Love 'stern wholemeal gaze' - I used to have lots of friends like that, who all regarded me as a complete dilettante because I rather liked white bread :-)
Ha ha! The expression has stuck in my head for years. It came from her Dulcie Domum column.

I love Monty so it's good news. I also like Alys, she's the granddaughter of somebody somewhere I've met or heard of (close connection, not!)Agree that Toby not v. exciting but he was competent. Trouble is Alan T and Monty are a hard act to follow.

Re: Monty

Yes, but neither as hard to follow as Geoff Hamilton. I think it was Monty who said that Alan's job was like being the Duchess of Cornwall: following a dead saint (in the public's view).

Thankyou for supplying me with the name of my shrub. I liked Alys Fowler's 'Edible Garden' very much but no-one can replace Geoff Hamilton on 'Gardener's World' - I can hear his voice as I type this.
Glad to help.

To my great surprise, I cried when Geoff died.
