Nature Watch: Goldfinches

Two goldfinches in the garden this morning, feasting on the seeds of Verbena bonariensis (another good reason not to cut down all your plants in autumn). I only mention it because it’s so unusual; I’m far more likely to see a deer or a rabbit than a goldfinch. Couldn’t get a photo, sadly.

I have been trying to tempt goldfinches to the feeders for a couple of years and trying again this year. I have a feeders full of sunflower hearts and niger seed which they are supposed to love so fingers crossed.
Hope you do get some, they're so pretty.

An hour later, as if to prove my point, I saw a deer cross the garden then do one of their famous standing jumps right over the hedge. They're incredible.
That must be marvellous to see. The most exciting thing we've had is a lost duck once and a sparrow hawk (which killed a dove right outside my window).
